Holistic Health Care – Mind Body interactions

The world is gradually turning towards all natural healing and treatments after following the Western medicine system for ages. The popularity of holistic health care is due to the raised awareness created by environmentalists who have pointed out the harm chemicals cause the earth and the human body. The worn out question here is which of the healing systems is better? Is the answer alterative medicine or is it Western medicine as we know it today?

Western medicine is still the standard practice of treatment all over the world. What happens when you use this method of healing is that you attack the result of the malfunctioning of the body in an attempt to get quick relief. The Western medicine system is based on the belief that the body is a battle field that has to be defended against enemy intruders, such as viruses, bacteria, germs and the like. Yet holistic health care principles say that all diseases are the direct result of your lifestyle, energy type and level, and beliefs. The bacteria, viruses, etc, would not find themselves inside the body in the first place if the body was encouraged to protect and heal itself through all natural holistic therapy.

According to holistic health care, the human body is capable of healing itself and holistic treatment is based on this concept. It is believed that the body needs a little, all natural boost so it can heal itself, since everything it needs is right in the system. Western medicine, on the other hand, believes in killing the harmful organisms to which the body reacts during illness. The basic difference is that the holistic system promotes self-healing, while the Western system takes over and attempts to bring peace by force.

Holistic health care and the Western systems follow two completely different (in fact opposite) premises. The holistic treatment looks at the body as one complete system where disease is the direct result of certain imbalances or malfunctioning of this whole system. Holistic healing is therefore induced by bringing back this perfect balance through physical exercises, all natural medicines, acupuncture, meditation, etc. Western medicine looks at disease as the result of an external invasion of harmful organisms, which need to be eradicated. This is achieved with medicines (chemicals) that attack these intruders; therefore, winning the battle means regaining your health.

  2. Hi,

Nice quote but I believe the meaning is a bit hazy for me. I see the relevance. Please enlighten me….

  3. it seems that although western medicine is adept at fighting illness, there is still a great amount of information that is unknown about ourselves and holistic medicine can help where western medicine doesn’t have the answer.

  4. Hi,

Thanks, I guess one of the reasons is that our way of thinking is based on wanting to control our environment and our bodies. We have a difficult time letting things be..

  5. I believe that holistic medicine will become more prevalent in most communities. People are beginning to realize that their lifestyles seriously affect their health and they are beginning to eat healthier, exercise more and try to gain a more wholesome way of life. Many times Western medical treatments harm more than they help.
